YOLANDA PEOPLE FINDER

THE ROLE OF ICT
 IN
 YOLANDA PEOPLE FINDER

Typhoon Yolanda was one of the most intense tropical cyclones on record, which devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, on November 8, 2013. It is the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, killing at least 6,300 people in that country alone. It is also the strongest storm recorded at landfall. In January 2014, bodies were still being found.

It’s been four years and half after that tragic day on November 8, 2013 – but to this day, no one can say for certain how many people perished in the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda.  Estimates on the number of casualties are as high as 7,000 with some 1,800 missing or presumed dead – which is not too far from the projection made by police chief superintendent Elmer Soria who was eventually sacked as Eastern Visayas regional head for saying the number of fatalities could reach 10,000.

The role of ICT in Yolanda People Finder is through the use of google. Wherein the  google has launched a Person Finder that allows individuals to post messages and search for the status of family and friends affected by the disaster. If you're worried about someone, click on the button that says "I'm looking for someone" and type in their name. If you have information about someone in the area, or want to let others know you are safe, click on the button "I have information about someone" and enter name and details.

Rappler is working with Google to consolidate all lists we have access to into Google Person Finder. Move.PH is generating lists of missing people by area as reported through these different lists. Rappler will help make this information available and useful to responders on the ground.

There’s so many sites in the internet today that allows people to access for free and  for them to find their loved ones. People finder really helps everyone especially those who are affected by the Super Typhoon “Haiyan” Yolanda. Rapid development of information and communication technologies (ICT) has lead to significant changes in social, economical and political relations of the modern society. Access to information and control over it contribute to the prevalence of soft power in politics of digital age, and empower the non-state actors in international relations In this times, ICT is really conventional since its a way of communication and gives assistance/aid to many people without difficulties.
